Throughout my years working with many projects, I have learned and gained experience in many areas of IT ranging from Operating Systems to various programming languages. I believe understanding more than the basics is important, but more so is to have a full understanding of their concepts because technical implementations change frequently whereas concepts usually remain the same. The core benefits of conceptual thinking combined with technical details is a greater understanding of the technology and the ability to quickly learn new implementations based on the same concepts. Additionally conceptual understanding leads to better target and overall solutions because IT environments contain multiple components that work together as one solution.
